Is this service right for you?

The Problem

Floors are dated — orange oak, honey finish, or a color that fights the rest of your decor

When To Choose Stain & Coat

  • ✓ You love the floor but hate the color
  • ✓ New addition doesn’t match existing floors and you want uniformity
  • ✓ Selling the home and current floor color is tanking offers

When NOT To Choose

  • ✕ Current color is fine — just do a recoat
  • ✕ Floor is engineered wood with thin veneer — can’t sand to bare wood

Our Clean ReCoat Process™

1

Color selection + test samples

We apply 3–5 sample stain colors on an inconspicuous area so you see actual result on your wood.

2

Full sand to bare wood

Three-grit sanding sequence, edge work, vacuum + tack.

3

Stain application + dry

Stain applied with rag + lambswool applicator, excess wiped off, 24-hour dry.

4

Seal with 2–3 polyurethane coats

Water-based poly for low VOC and clarity, with light buffing between coats.

The Benefits

  • Completely change the room’s feel without new flooring
  • Match floors across multiple rooms if recent additions don’t blend
  • Modernize dated 90s/2000s finishes to current neutral palettes

Common Questions About Stain & Coat

Can I stain without sanding?

No. Stain needs to penetrate raw wood fibers to color the floor. Stain will not bond through an existing polyurethane finish — it will just bead up and wipe off. Any stain color change requires a full sand-to-bare-wood first.

How do I pick a stain color?

We apply 3–5 sample strips on your actual floor wood so you see exactly how the stain will look on your species (oak vs. maple vs. walnut react very differently to the same stain). Pictures from Pinterest can be misleading.

Will the stain fade over time?

Stain itself is quite stable once sealed under polyurethane. What typically fades is sun-exposed wood (called "ambering") — the wood itself changes color from UV. This is most dramatic on cherry, pine, and Brazilian cherry, minimal on white oak.
