Grit Progression — The Sanding Sequence

The sequence of coarse-to-fine abrasive grits used to sand a wood floor to bare smooth wood.

What it is

A full sand-and-refinish uses a grit progression — typically 36 or 40 grit for rough cut, 60 grit for medium, and 80 or 100 grit for final smoothing. Skipping grits causes visible scratch patterns that the finish can’t hide.
